Academic
Building on my PhD, in which I studied the use of magic as an educational contrivance in the Victorian period, my academic work explores how the skill and approach of the conjurer can be utilised in an educational context. During the last decade, I have found that magic has a role to play in settings as diverse as therapy for young people, business training, grass roots science engagement and medical education. Currently, I am a performer in residence at Imperial College London/Royal College of Music Centre for Performance Science.

Catching a bullet on a china plate. A magician without any hands. Conversations with the dead. The last five hundred years are filled with astonishing moments of magic and now you have a unique opportunity to discover the truth behind the smoke and mirrors.
In Dr Houstoun’s Conjuring you will see effects that created legends and hear stories so remarkable that you will question what is real. Can you trust your judgement, or will these past masters continue to dazzle and deceive? There is only one way to find out… Join me as I pull back the curtain on some of the most incredible magicians of days gone by!
The performance can be staged for all audience sizes and lasts between 20 and 90 minutes.
